Growing Halal market in Russia

Growing Halal market in Russia

In addition to Lenten fare products for Christian, a considerable share of Russian market takes Halal products for Muslims. But it is hard to esteem the real volume of Halal products in Russian Market and there is no official statistics of them said the Head of Center of standardization and certification “Halal” Jafar Azizbaev to IFX.RU publication.

The largest share of the amount of consumed Halal products takes poultry (chicken). Russia produces about 50 thousand tones of such poultry annually, almost the same level of import. The main importers of Halal chicken are such countries as France and Brazil, the expert said.

However besides the certified chicken (about 90%) there are “grey” producers of Halal meat in the market (and its compliance neither with religious nor with sanitary standards is rather questionable).

In general in Russia there are about 2 million consumers of chicken that meets Muslim tradition requirements and “Halal-PPT-RMC” standard of the Russian Mufties Council. Though this figure includes not only Muslims as Jafar Azizbaev said. For example, in Bashkotostan the local market of poultry is led by the absolute leader “Turbaslin broilers” company that produces exclusively Halal products (about 4 thousand tones of chicken a month). Its products are in demand of all inhabitants of the Republic regardless their religious identity, the head of the “Halal” center explained.

The major producers of Halal products are also "Prioskolye" (Belgorod region), "Maykop poultry farm", "Broiler-Chelny (Tatarstan) and Moscow Elinar-Broiler.

Besides chicken, Russia produces Halal beef, in the whole about 1 thousand tones of such meat is produced a month Jafar Azizbaev said. The import is comparable to the volume of domestic production. Also there is a considerable share of unaccounted-halal meat consumption that villagers produce in their own farms.

The major Russian producer of Halal beef is “MOS-ET”, firm, that produces meat under the brand name "Ecole".

According to Jafar Azizbaev, this plant is the main supplier of Halal meat in store chains such as Ashan, Metro, Utkonos, Perekrestok.

Olga Tokareva from “Metro Cash&Carry Russia” confirmed to IFX.RU publication that Halal production in their stores is produced by “MOS-ET”, and import Halal producers in range is not represented. As she said, in the store network of their company they sell chilled beef and chilled mutton, all products are packaged in green gas tray and vacuum packaging. The share of sales of Halal meat in their network in Moscow is 15 %.

In X5 Retail the IFX.RU publication was told that they don’t keep record and special accounting for Halal products.

As for the consumption of already processed meat the major producer of Halal sausage is the holding Tzaritzyno, said J. Azizbaev. However according to the Head of Halal Center, the youth more loyal and prefer bottled plant products.

In the whole the market of Halal products as the interlocutor of IFX.RU publication said is growing due to the increase of consumers for whom such products were unavailable before such as inhabitants of remote areas of the North, oil fields and their accompanying cities and towns, where as a rule people from Caucasus, Tatarstan and Bashkiriya live, also traditional homelands of Muslims in rural areas of Povolzhie (Nizhniy Novgorod, Saratov, Samara, Volgograd, Astrakhan, Stavropol, Adigeya and others).

Besides according to the expert the market grows in breadth: confectionery products, dry milk, flour, bakery products, meat, deer, quail, ostriches, etc. “The crisis didn’t affect our market” – emphasized Jafar Azizbaev. Moreover according to him the next 3-5 years qualitative changes should happen due to “increase of the lucky Muslim-businessmen in this market”. Thus, a businessman Ruslan Baysarov in Chechnya builds totally Halal meat plant", reminded the head of the Halal Center.

In Moscow the expert estimated the amount of citizens who follow Muslims traditions (and therefore consumers of halal products) at about 100 thousand people. However the total amount of Halal products consumers in the capital can be more. Since as it often happens in other confessions today not only very religious people decide to follow traditional religious food requirements.
